I rocommend getting this game BUT not yet. This game is fun however in the current build your not going to get more than one to two hours of gameplay out of each start due to bugs and errors. That said this game has alot of potential and i hope they fix things quickly but untill you see a significant updat that fixes alot of bugs and errors you should hold off on getting it for now.
I'm giving this game a not recommended, even though I like it and will continue to play it. Currently it's extremely buggy with random crashes for many/some people, and it's really unpolished as well. There's a tutorial that explains things as you click on them, but it doesn't tell you about things you haven't clicked on, that you need to click on to survive. When the game gets better I'll change my review, if it does.
This game needs a lot of work. It constantly crashes after a few minutes of play. Underground pathing needs work as the miners get stuck underground. Dwarves go to the table and starve to death when food is available. My last 3 games they will till and plant but refuse to havest anything after the 1st harvest. Cannot get them to put in flooring even though they have plenty of the materials needed. Cannot get them to build blocks for walls when materials are plentiful. Annoying screen popup just to say goodbye to the trader after you have already told them to leave. Cannot havest eggs that for some reason are floating in the air. Have built extra storeage and treasury areas just to be notified that I do not have enough space for items or money when the newly built areas are empty. Every time they herd a chicken into an animal pen the game crashes. Game is totally OVERpriced for what you get or don't get depending on your views. So, to sum things up, save yourself some grief and $$ and wait a few months and see if the DEV/S do some to fix this game so it is reasonably playable.
This game is not currently worth my time. The idea behind the game and what the trailer shows off seems really appealing, but the developer still needs to work on this game a ton before it can be actually playable in an enjoying way. Many bugs, major parts of the game don't even work properly, and the developer hasn't updated the game since June of 2021. I understand development can take a while, but they could've at least dropped some sort of fix to major issues in the game. Basically, keep an eye on the game, but until the developer actually makes this game fully playable then don't waste your money.
I am running this on a thinkpad on linux and the main game runs decently. But as soon as you get into the Workers and employee screens the game goes down to a scrawl. Not well optimized, for such a simple game it is far too heavy on resource usage.
At this moment, the game is still too rough to be considered playable. The spirit of Dwarf Fortress is there, but it's missing a lot of it's QoL features, like a task/job manager to optimize your dwarves' time. I would wait before investing in this at the moment.
Considering that the game is still alpha, I think they've done a good job trying to replicate a Dwarf Fortress experience. There is still room for improvement, the UI can be improved and the tutorial can explain a bit more. Maybe a standalone tutorial would be indicated for such a complex game. Anyway, can't wait to see how this game progresses.
I love this game, I truly enjoy playing it... when it works. There are still several bugs that need to be squashed but it is still in development. If you are curious about purchasing this game and whether or not you would enjoy it, I assure you, you will, until something goes wrong. They are often small things but they tend to ruin the experience. With that said I recommend this game, just not today. They are looking at having everything where they want it around Q4 2018. I don't want anyone to purchase this game now and write it off. There are constant, meaningful updates. This team clearly wants to make not only a fully functional but also highly enjoyable experience. I look forward to watching this game grow.
LINUX USER This was released with lots of problems and that has hurt its rating. The Dev's have worked hard patching the game and for me its now in a playable state. That's given me the confidence to recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre and wants to follow the progress of a promising game. Just dont expect a bug free or complete game, its still very, very early access! Lots of potential though! Dont let me down Dev's :)
Early Stages of development, very neat graphics for starters --- at first it can be overwhelming but the tasks become increasingly easy once you get the hang of it, a novelty is the ability to build carts for transportation, be careful in your trades as some factions (damn tree-hugging elves!) dont like when you trade them certain items. the issues i ve encountered so far are: The slider camera, but nothing game breaking, just needs more options to fine tune when you need to switch between levels and mining hioles can be a bit difficult due this Resolution on windowed - i accidentally set it up to a resolution higher which broke the window and made it unclickable to fix (phased out off-screen), had to delete the settings in %appdata folder to restore it, works well on fullscreen, i suggest the main menu should use keyboard input as well (arrows, enter key) to correct this in the UI Small Pathing issues (just build something next to the stuck character to make it move), only encountered once so far because i dug under a stair mining can leave floating objects (trees), just chop them to make them go away Overall still needs more character and gameplay depth and objects/professions, i suggest you keep an eye for this game's development, its $10 that might help the devs in the long run to bring out these features --- this has a Dwarf Fortress Feeling, without being such, as it currently is, you can compare it to Gnomoria but with the potential to be better once the updates with new stuff start rolling in. Hopefully itl reach Stonehearth's level of depth, and perhaps, more
Before you read; I will update this over time This game is fun, its interesting and I know if the developer keeps at it, it will be a great game. It takes Dwarf Fortress and makes it much more user friendly and appealing to the casual audience. Its easy to understand and yet involves allot of the complex mechanics from the original game. Right now there are allot of issues, saves corrupting, glitchy A.I, outright crashing and game play interruptions. allot of them are excusable because its been out for 2 days. But saves corrupting, A.I breaking and crashes are very interruptive and should not be in a $20 game (Even in early access). I will be updating this from a NO to a YES when the game functions without crashing and save corrupting, because so far its a good game. Updates; 28-sep-2017, saves still only work sometimes, so don't invest too much time in this, you will still lose it. Since writing this review I have been involved in allot of forum contact with the devs and they are very interested in feedback and are clearly dedicated to hammer out these issues. 30-oct-2017, everything I have listed is still an issue. Lots of fixes, not of much that breaks the game though, in fact it tends to crash more now. Keep holding onto that money folks, the game is still broken. 18-nov 2018, coming this arvo 01/01/2020, Look Its been a long time, I admit I felt so defeated by how broken and buggy this game was when I purchased it, I just didn't get back to it (like 10 years into its development but its first day on steam). I put a few hours into it the other day and this is where we are at. It seams to work, by that I mean the world generates and it saves (High bars I know), but overall its a long and difficult process of overcoming clunky controls and sometimes compleatly broken AI. Overall It's staying in my "do not recommend pile" because despite the idea being a great and super fun sounding one, in practice its just boring, I spent the whole time battling with the game to get anything done (not to mention the amount of hidden mechanics and sometimes broken menus). Save your money and buy something that works smoothly after 2 years on steam (or like 12 since they started).
There a true gem in here but it needs some polish The AI is often confused and seems intent to getting to rooms by making a hole in the roof. Forges and anvils just made my dwarfs skip over them over and over. But you can tell a game is going to be really good because your willing to put up with the bugs. The years working on this have not been wasted but it does need pushed over the finish line.
I love Dwarf Fortress, so I had to check this game out. Though as of this review the game CTDs unexpectedly at times, disabling vsync and setting faults to low seems to have extended my play time considerably. Saving at this point is non-functional. The game runs beautifully, though I've heard reports of lag. The controls (though still a bit lacking) feel intuitive. There are some forgivable but frustrating bugs at this early stage (Dwarves getting stuck in place, combat crashing). I love everything about this game so far. I look forward to its growth.
UPDATE 13 November ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Finally got a chance to sink more time into Dwarf Corp after some patches. The newly implemented task system has helped keep the dwarves working regularly. I do wish there was a UI for it so you could adjust priority and more easily see who is doing what but being able to set a job and have a qualified dwarf go complete it is a big plus. Many of the original bugs have been squashed which has made for a much smoother and more enjoyable experience. I do still hit some hard crashes but rather than dwarves stopping whatever they're doing or just not responding, I crash to desktop with an error. Kind of a bummer when it happens before a save but that's the nature of the Early Access beast. Overall, still really enjoying the game. The progress is visible and it's obvious the devs are committed. I'm looking forward to future updates and new content. ORIGINAL REVIEW ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I went back and forth on picking this up for a bit before finally taking the dive. Granted I've only played for just a little over two hours at the time of writing this, I'm cautiously optimistic DwarfCorp will become something great. TL;DR: I wish Steam's review system wasn't black and white. I'm recommending partly because I want to see this game thrive and partly because I think behind all of the technical issues, there is a great game in the making here. However, if you aren't up for game breaking bugs, technical issues, and some frustration - WAIT. First and foremost, this game can be compared to other great survival games like Gnomoria or RimWorld but there is a twist I didn't realize existed until I got into the game- trading isn't just something that makes life easier in DwarfCorp; it's absolutely necessary. Your dwarves are part of a business set out to make money. Your dwarves also need to get paid. Each dwarf, depending on level, makes a certain amount of money each and every night. You NEED to make money to keep up your colony. That means it isn't enough to just gather food, cook meals, and explore. Searching for valuables, crafting trinkets, interacting with different colonies - all of this is vital to keep your industrious dwarves going. Let me get the bad/ugly out of the way first- 1) There are game breaking bugs. I've had one crash so far and in a previous game I got to a point where I couldn't harvest plants or pick up eggs from my birds. This severely hindered my ability to make money. On top of that, dwarves just seemed to stop stocking items they were carrying which meant all of my precious gems and materials I found were worthless. Eventually I went bankrupt and there was nothing I could do about it. However, my games have saved and loaded just fine so that's a plus. 2) Job queue. There isn't one. You select a dwarf, you tell it do x, and it does x. But if you tell the dwarf to do x y z, I THINK it does x y z in the order you set your actions. Problem is there is no queue to set manual priority or order or whatever. I feel like games like this NEED a queue. I've seen games struggle to do this properly *cough* Clockwork Empires *cough* but it can be done. 3) The UI. It works but there are times where I'm not sure if an option is selected. On top of that, there is a separate "tool" for selecting dwarves which can be annoying, especially when dwarves are scattered about. A simpler alternative would be small portraits for each dwarf, or a list where you can see some details about each and select from there. There are a a few other UI issues I ran into but they're all things that I think refinement will resolve. 4) Audio. The music is enjoyable. The rest...eh. Probably the worst is each faction that comes to trade will talk to you in a "language" specific to them. Problem is they make a noise for each word that appears on screen which, while cute and interesting at first, gets old really quickly. It's overkill. I found myself either just dismissing the trader so I wouldn't have to listen to them, or quickly selecting options to hear as little bumbling as possible. That and the little grunt your dwarves make after setting a job. Again, something that can be resolved in future iterations. 5) Direction. There is a tutorial that is helpful for getting started but for other things, I wasn't really sure what I was doing or what I needed to do to get things working. For example, I built a stove and cooking table and was compelled to click on each to queue up jobs. Turns out, that's not how it works. Each station opens up options in various menus. Build a cooking table, now you can cook meals, the option for which is found in the cook menu. Build barrels, now you can make ale again, found in the cook menu. Don't get me wrong, it makes sense, but it wasn't intuitive. Or I failed to read something. Who knows. 6) Content. There isn't a ton. There's a variety of enemies and factions but as far as work stations, items, crops, ores, etc., it's lacking. But it's early access. I think that comes with the territory. That's a lot of not great. So why on earth do I recommend this game? 1) All of the issues I've mentioned are FIXABLE. Nothing I encountered made me feel like the devs are going in the wrong direction. There are issues, lots of them, but each and every one has a solution. Some probably easier to fix than others but I'd be more worried if there were terrible design choices that were so deeply rooted that there was nothing that could be done without rework. 2) The devs. It's three guys with day jobs who work on this as a passion project (from what I've gathered). This may sound like a bad thing but after seeing multiple updates since release, responses to questions in the forums, and the promise of a new build on a weeked, it's obvious these guys care about their game. Furthermore, they made the game open source which can have HUGE benefits. The modding community always brings new light to games (see Gnomoria) and allowing people like to have a hand in shaping this game is fantastic. 3) Beneath it all, it's fun. Colony building, crop growing, trinket making, cooking, baddy killing, exploring, trading. I've only played for two hours but I only stopped because of the game breaking bugs I ran into (inability to harvest and dwarves not dumping inventory). I'm looking forward to starting over again. 4) I want to support development. I can't code my way out of a paper bag so contributing that way isn't an option. Buying the game early is the next best thing. I want to see this game do well. I want to see the devs keep it up. They seem to be focused on bug fixes at the moment and while I'm not sure what their plans are for new content, I personally think killing as many bugs as possible before adding new content is the way to go. I'd rather have a light game that works well than a dense game that barely functions. That seems to be their aim right now and I respect that. All in all, I think DwarfCorp is moving towards something really great. A lot of games with similar elements have come and gone, some abandoned (Towns), others not as flesh out as we all hoped or expected (Gnomoria), and I certainly hope DwarfCorp doesn't go the same way. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. If the devs keep up the communication and development, I think this will become a great contender in the colony sim genre.
Not a game I would recommend in this current state. Need a major UI overhaul, more user friendly. A lot of small options needs to be reworked, but has potential to be a good game in the future if the dev fixes the UI.
had this for a few years now and very little has changed, not worth the price as it's barely even an ALPHA version
very glitchy at its release. after awhile i cannot make my dwarves do anything. if it isnt acting up in game its crashing the rest of the time. wouldnt recommend it until they get more bugs figured out.
the game is great! but problem is it crashes too frequently :( i love the mechanics of the game and it has a professional feel to it. one complaint is it takes too long to hire new dwarf because i need to keep closing dialogue boxes and opening new ones. also auto saves too frequently. i would also add a feture that allows you to engage with other factions rather than having them show up all the time to trade with you, it becomes too distracting after a while and they get in the way of building. those are some of the issues im having right now but over all im having a lot of fun! i found the game through imgur by the way :)
When you start the game, its beautiful and fluid. But each minutes that passes, the more and more the game is lagging until its completly unplayable. You got 20 min of gameplay before crash. Sad cause this game seems fun i think?.
Though the game still needs some polishing, and reading other's reviews you will understand, I do wish to stress the hard work put into this game. 1-Updates are predictable. Actually maybe too much because each time I hit a wall I have to wait for either sunday or monday. The good thing is I KNOW they will fix the issues we have. 2-They keep informing us and if they don't right away, they come back on it. Many times they will even post in our discussions. 3-They seem to listen. Seem because I don't go much on their forums but I do see a correlation between recent frustrations and recent updates. 4-In their last update they said they will be aiming to stabilize rather than adding. They ARE working on new content, but they give priority to stability. The game is frustrating sometimes, but each time its improving. You may want to wait a bit, but if you don't mind restarting every now and then, then why wait and not join the community right now and voice your suggestions?
Part Minecraft, part god-sim. Still a work in progress with new features coming reliably. A bit niche but a joy for those who are into this sort of thing.
dev has given up its ok he problly got a job
A couple things to keep in mind before you let this review persuade you not to buy. - First, check the date on this review, make sure the issues I highlight are still a problem. -Second, early access is intended to allow people to assist the devs, both in bugfinding and also by funding further development. Having said that, this game is currently non functional. Extra stockpiles do not work, and you can destroy your beginning stockpile if you wanted to resize it. Filling the stockpile can cause your dwarves to lose the ability to queue tasks correctly. Occasional clipping behaviour issues (dwarves sinking half-way into a layer, or dropping four layers into solid stone) FPS issues if you have the game running for very long. Many crashes, most of which appear to manifest by interrupting the behaviour programming of your dwarves- ruining the save file. Currently there is no/next to no community support around this game in the form of Wiki or Forum that I can find, which makes troubleshooting these issues difficult. I don't recommend it generally. But, if you feel like you'd very likely buy this game (once complete) and you don't mind being part of the development of a currently non-functional game, then maybe I would recommend it to you. The core of this game seems to be a really nice collection of influences, Rimworld and Dwarf fortress being the most obvious. And I think we need more games like that. Especially a game that really fulfills the Dungeon-sim niches of old, which this game seems able to do with it's tricky-but-clever UI/Slicing system, vibrant personality and bright artwork/audio. tl;dr game currently non functional- do not buy without knowing what you're signing up for but get it if you want to be part of the process that helps make this game grow.
