It can be difficult for a party game to strike a balance between casual
accessibility and competitive depth, but King of the Hat manages to pull this
off in a fun way that shouldn't deter players on either side of the scale. At
its core, the gameplay is incredibly simple: jump on your opponent's hat to win,
while using your own hat as a weapon. Different characters offer unique movement
and hat-throwing abilities to mix up the gameplay.
The risk/reward of using your hat as a weapon is extremely fun. When playing for
the first time, I found myself gradually building up the comfort and courage to
start attempting more aggressive tactics, which was super satisfying. General
movement also feels very good, so you don't feel like you're fighting with the
game itself. Over time, developing mastery over the movement and controlling
your hat opens up the competitive depth of the game. King of the Hat's deceptive
skill ceiling comes from creative use of its most basic mechanics.
Overall, it's a fun, fast-paced party game that is incredibly easy to understand
and play, while still being rewarding for those who choose to stick with it.

Been following this for a few years now. If you like platform fighters you'll
certainly love this. Fun, accessible, fast paced and a vibrant and colorful
aesthetic, King of the Hat is great as a party game or if you want to get sweaty
and competitive with your buds. Also has the most committed and passionate group
of devs I have ever seen! Definitely worth a try if you're a Smash player.
Couldn't recommend more!

It's an amazing casual game that is so easy to pickup. You just throw your hat
to hattack and crush theirs to win, but if yours gets crush you lose. It's that
easy! Even recommended to those who are new to gaming or for young children.
However, in its simplicity, it's skill ceiling is high due to characters' unique
tool-sets and their techs, and how punishing and rewarding in top plays. If
you're fighting against a very competitive player, getting hit once is
incredibly hard to recover and will result in losing that round. It even has
ROLLBACK NETCODE. Making causal and competitive online games fun!
Compare this to the Discord version while back, it has way more content with its
Arcade Mode, Golf Mode, NEW CHARACTERS, NEW STAGES and additional rules and
items to casually play around. In addition, it's way more polish with its GUI
and and other quality of life improvements.
Overall, it's an amazing game and I'm honestly astonished to how persistent the
devs are in making this game to the fullest. I wouldn't be here without the
coolest and nicest people in Hat Games. It's worth the price despite it being
early access.
This is coming from someone who has been in the community for almost 3 years and
seen the changes and improvements the devs has done. It's inspiring!

You will swiftly learn how bad your brain is at tracking both a hat and
person/cat/blob/washing machine. 10/10, phenomenal schmoovement, more golfing
levels please

I was not able to play much of this game back when it was on the Discord Game
Store. I'm glad it made it to Steam because it's a really good party game to
play with friends. Very simple and straight to the point, it had me messing
around with my opponent's hats doing hit combos, but once your hat is exposed,
you are very vulnerable. Recommended!

Played the game a ton during conventions and truly glad it is finally out.
Simple, addictive and butt-clenching experience. Character controller is tight
and the game can be enjoy by the most casual to the try hardest of them all.

I would've liked this game if it weren't for the final boss of arcade mode, I
genuinely hope whoever came up with that fight gets their dick stuck in an
active blender

Amazing game, Just minutes in to playing and it was already my birthday!
My hat's off to you if you're coming online to get Washed Machine.
If the fighting-platformer is not enough, take your hat golfing in single
player.

I've been following this game in development entirely through discord for the
past few years since that's where the game originated, and my steam counted
hours don't reflect my total time. I have thousands of hours on this game and
ive seen it through everything from ranked queues to tournaments, testing
builds, and MANY MANY games in friendlies.
The game at first glance has a very intuitive menu that's easy to navigate, if
you've played smash the menu is pretty similar, but the gameplay is anything but
smash, it's very volatile with how fast paced fights can get, but it handles
that pacing really well with its defensive mechanic of hats clanking together.
The game itself can feel a little over defensive at times, but once you get an
idea for how your character works, there's a ton of counterplay.
Every character brings something new to the table which keeps matches
interesting, all while keeping the same idea intact which brings a variety of
gameplay every time you play. There's a bunch of tech/advanced movement lots of
characters can do if you want to play competitively and it makes the matches
even more volatile. This can even be further expanded using the games items or
special modes if you decide to mess around with those.
One thing to note is in the games current state, you will need to join the
discord server if you want to find any matches because there's no in game
matchmaking, although if the game succeeds this might change, and i will update
my review.
Casually or competitively, King of the Hat I've witnessed throughout the years
has something to show everyone and I can't recommend this game enough!

I'm a big fan of these party style games that remind me of older games I grew up
with in the arcade, home consoles, and my Commodore 64. One may feel the price
for this style of game is a bit high, but it does have friend passes, and quite
a bit of content to unlock already, so i feel it's worth the 20 dollars.
The game has a few modes, but most people are going to gravitate to the
multiplayer action, where up to 4 players select a different fighter and try to
step on everyone else's hat! You also throw your hat as a weapon, and timing
when to throw it, when to not throw it, and what your opponents are doing is a
huge part of the tactics in this game. Every character is at least slightly
different, with Birthday being the baseline and others having various bonuses
and penalties comparatively.
I have a couple of minor issues that don't detract from the overall fun of the
game; the money you earn currently does nothing, the abilities of each character
could be a bit better defined, and it could be a little clearer as to how to
change your outfit with a controller (it uses the bumpers, but found out by
watching some videos). All of this is fixable and minor, making this an easy
recommendation.
This one is up there with Duck Game, Stick Fight, and Rounds; chaotic
multiplayer fun, and I look forward to seeing what else they add to the game.

I've only tried the single player arcade mode so far, but it was great. I like
how the simple mechanics can lead to complex strategies by throwing and
retrieving your hat.

Full disclosure, I met the devs at their booth at an event in Washington D.C. a
few years back and that is what initially put this game on my radar. It may seem
like a bias but I do believe that good dev/community interaction improves my
view on a game, personally.
The other reason that is important is that I fully believe a setting like that
is the ideal way to play this game. The single player is fairly simple and not
too intensive, but it is short. I beat the campaign on normal and hard in less
than an hour combined. The golfing mode was also a fun addition because it lets
you play around with the hat mechanics in a different way, but it is also short.
Multiplayer online with friends doing quick matches/grinding is fun but loses
it's charm pretty quick.
This is a game that shines in an open environment where groups of people can
walk up and play casually.
The devs had a small tournament at this event with the available characters and
it was a really fun experience for my friends and I to play the game and in
between matches grab a bite to eat while talking with the devs/other passers-by.
I just think a party/event is the best way to play. That is my honest opinion.
As far as the raw gamplay goes, it feels great in your hands. It's simple to
pick up but has a lot to it making mastery a fairly high ceiling. I like the
concept and execution is on point for what it is. The characters all have unique
quirks to them so every single one feels like it will take a different approach
to really understand.
I unfortunately missed the opportunity to get the game when it was (free?) on
the discord store when that existed but I think purchasing it here was a better
move in my honest opinion. If it interests you at all it's a great game to play
with some friends in a casual party setting.

AWESOME GAME, I beta tested for this game and it was awesome!

In my honest opinion this game should be the game of the year!

Haven't yelled at my friends this much since playing Smash!
This game is everything I love: simple but meaningful mechanics, the controls
feel amazing, the characters and art are full of personality, and it doesn't
take itself too seriously. Easy to pick up, hard to put down! A total banger.
