A fun little game for fans of the older Fire Emblem games. It doesn't have quite the same level of depth, nor is the story quite as compelling, but I am thoroughly enjoying it. Tactically it's challenging, the unit roster's nice and varied and playing a few chapters with the villain first is quite the entertaining twist. Definitely worth the money.

While this game is fun to play for a little bit I wanted to mention some of the good things and bad things. First the good things, the portraits are pretty good though there could be a few improvements but I won't nit pick too much on it. The gameplay is good at its core but I will get into somethings wrong with it later. The game runs well as something that people would expect. However, the problems that exist should and probably will be fixed over time as I just saw the recent review. The map design may be good in some areas but many maps have problems that can make the game unfun for some players. I personally feel that there are too few playable units in this game. like the other review legendary weapons should be a late game item not an early game one. The writing also has a few issues as in one moment the game tells us Abel's feelings towards Amy(that is her name if I am not mistaken) when it should be shown in dialogue between them in the opening of a stage. So make sure that there are not moments that tell the players something when it is better when it is shown. Though even with the issues it does have I still feel people should play this game.

I sold some Steam cards for this, and man, what a deal that was! It might be the best deal in the history of deals, maybe ever. This game is an incredible value for its price. It plays just like Fire Emblem, and has top notch writing. The choice of classical music for the soundtrack is also really, really great and enhances the atmosphere quite a bit. The characters are also very well done and have good history and motivation. I haven't finished it yet, but so far the quality is outstanding. At the time of this review, I just finished Scenario 7. Yeah, I recommend this. Great game for an incredibly low price!

Clarent Saga: Tactics is a fun little game in the spirit of the Fire Emblem series. The story is a little cheesy, but that just adds a bit of charm for me. It was a little confusing at first since the descriptions claims you follow the story of Prince Abel of Meyr, but in the first several battles you actually control the main enemy. This is just setting the stage for Prince Abel, so it is fitting.

This is a tactical rpg that is constantly getting updates that fix issues and improve the quality of the game over time. It is similar to what you would expect from an SRPG studio game in the early game, with two chapters being outright copies of the maps from the sample game SRPG Studio gives you to experiment with. Later on, however, the game grows in quality and becomes an enjoyable experience. The only serious negative I have is towards the stats in the game. The game doesn't explain any of them and the only reason why I figured which ones influenced which is because I had a copy of SRPG Studio and played a ton of Fire Emblem. Overall, I like this game. For such a low price, you get a decent tactical rpg with multiple routes.

I’ve never written a review before, as I generally consider it a waste of time of my time, but wow this game was so fucking awesome I had to post something. To give you a little background, I’m a Fire Emblem fan through-and-through and I don't have time to play video games much anymore as I'm busy. When I saw this gem on the steam store though, I couldn't resist. I ended up completing the game on the hardest difficulty and unlocking both of the endings. In my opinion, the game’s greatest strength is its small maps and smart AI. Instead of just throwing my strongest unit at the enemy, I had to you know, use tactics. Personally, I would suggest not playing it on the hardest difficulty, as a couple levels were super annoying. (I’m looking at you John. Your little assassin buddies are bullshit.) Story-wise, I really liked how the narrative progressed. I’m not going to give any spoilers, but it made the later chapters feel more impactful as you were emotionally connected to the characters. There wasn't that much dialogue, but it was always high-quality and relevant. Sure this game has some flaws: a couple of sprites had the wrong hair color, 2 of the unit’s in Abel’s party were useless, and it crashed a couple of times trying to load a saved game (wasn’t a big deal though as all I had to do was reload it from Steam). But here’s the thing, in the end none of those things matter as I had a blast playing it. At this price it’s a steal. If you love games like FE or other TRPGs, I would buy it. Immediately. I promise, you won’t regret it.

Clarent Saga: Tactics is a fun game in the spirit of Fire Emblem. Its mechanics are fairly simple, and it has a story full of interesting plot twists that I found unique. Some of the characters are rather memorable, and the story definitely follows the 'nations at war' theme like most of the Fire Emblem games. Pros- The story is enjoyable and enough to keep you invested. It reminded me a lot of Phantasy Star III with its generations, which was a welcome change, and this was a fairly unique aspect compared to many other games. All of the main characters were likeable and felt different. There's the 'experienced veteran', 'silent type,' 'carefree girl,' and so on, and they work. The optional conversations between characters were fun to read, and I really got a sense of everyone's personalities. The music has a lot of SRPG Studio stock, but there are a few really incredible new tracks, like the one used in the trailer, which is my favourite. It's heard in the game a few times, which I loved. The music is appropriately used, and does its best to enhance the moments of the game. There are wide variety of units, from the lords and knights, to mages, priests, and bishops. It is possible to promote your units, too, and you are often given a choice to pick between two different classes for most of your units. One aspect of this game I like most of all is that your weapons are never in danger of breaking. That always bothered me about the FE games, but I think it's a nice change here, where you can use a favourite team, choose to solo, or come up with another strategy. Each character got his or her own legendary weapon, which I liked, although I wish the story painted a more convincing argument for this that felt believable. Cons - I would've liked to see a wider variety to the maps, since many are reused throughout the game. You visit the cave where you find the legendary weapons a grand total of three times, and I was left wondering why someone would refill the chests with a fresh supply of weapons each time. Enemy variety could've been a bit better. Many maps have batches of five magi knights, five wyvern riders, etc., bunched all together as a group, which was a bit odd, but I didn't mind this too much since it was still challenging at times. Flying units are the toughest in the game since they love to target your priests and mages. Abel and Ami's relationship felt really rushed. I think it would've been better if they had known each other for a while before the story starts, since you get no real progression to their relationship. They were two of my favourite characters, and I would've really liked to see them bond more over the course of the game. Needless to say, I was still affected by the story's events. _____ Definitely check this game out if you like Fire Emblem and want something comparable, yet a bit simpler. It's a great way to spend a few days off, and you'll be thinking about it a while after you finish it, which is always a good thing in my book.

So Clarent Saga: Tactics. I found this by chance and it was on a discount at that. I've been an avid player and fan of the Fire Emblem franchise ever since FE7 and the SRPG maker, which was used to create this game is awesome and naturally I enjoyed the game somewhat, seeing as it is basically a "Fire Emblem fan game" - if you are like me a dedicated fan of the franchise, give this a try. I don't know how much extra work goes in little details like the arrow when moving a unit, display of exp-bars and some such, but seeing them inplemented while I play through the game showed me how much I appreciate them. That brings me right to the point of game mechanics. Skills, Weapons, map effects, the aforementioned little quality of life things... it's all there and leaves little to be desired. A somewhat better use of the weaponlevel and a few weapons I missed could be nice to have, but that is a minor thing. But speaking of weapons. How many "legendary weapons" are there? and just how many of these are stored in that one mountain? it is a cave with 3 chests and magically each time you visit a cave you get 3 legendary weapons. I've honestly lost count and the story doesn't do a good job with it either. It's always just "there are legendary weapons in that one mountain. let's grab 'em" and by the time you go there for the third time your just like "oh. really?" There is no lore to them, no explaination of any sort and no mention why all are in one fricking cave or why no one bothered to grab 'em all then there. and this leads to my next point. reusing maps. I'm not even oppossed if a map got used twice if it is an important location and 2 big battles are fought there. But seriously. Using like every single map at least twice (safe for the final map) and other maps even three times... and the cave I mentioned? I'm not even sure if I was 3 or 4 times on that map. Worse still, in most cases on the maps the enemy positions are the same as then you play it for the first time. So effectively your playing not really 2 chapters but one chapter twice. (though the enemys and your units are different, but still) and again that directly brings the next thing up: with the same maps, same enemy positions and same map goals... and the fact that enemy behaviour is always the same... you can scratch the "s" out of "tactics" because you'll ever only be meant to use one tactic and there no insentives to do something else, more like the other way around. And "very hard" wasn't even hard, let alone very. It was kind of hard enough to not make you "leroy jenkins" all the maps (albeit in some you very well could) but it left me somewhat disappointed. If you have 4 difficulty settings, you could've used them to make a bit more of a challenge and make the difficuties more distinct. And the story wasn't much to look at either. The conversations often boiled down to "let's do this" at the start of the chapter and "let's rest" at the end of the chapter. But I liked the little conversations option which gives basically supportconversations (and a advice option, which would've been great if the diffculty would've been higher and the tactics be actual tactics instead of one single tactic. Also different chapter goals could've made things much more interessting.) So overall... Well I don't regret buying or playing it but at the same time, seeing all my own points I can't recommend this game. Because it is lacking all over the place.

I regret not giving this game a proper review back when I originally played it, having bought it all the way back on February 17, 2018 for...according to old account statements, about half a dollar, probably during a sale. Back then, the game was fairly rough around the edges, with a lot of default character/user interface graphics and a simple plot reminiscent of the first Fire Emblem or Langrisser game...and I still enjoyed it, to the point of playing for hours and getting three different endings. Nothing too remarkable, but at the same time, no major flaw that would tick off fans of Tactics games. Since that time, the game has gone through some MASSIVE improvements. Any memories I have of past runs are completely obsolete, with the game now having a larger cast, a more refined story, and...well, just more content in general. What was once "passable" has turned into a solid thumb-up, and it's not even complete yet, with the release of a "1.0" version just around the corner. The development team behind Clarent Saga has always been small, but dedicated, and I do hope this passion project gets the attention it deserves once all is said and done.

This is a reimagining of the Pelorian Wars RPGMaker game into more of a tactical RPG. It is slightly more streamlined and straightforward. Would recommend.

Not the greatest but for the price you really have nothing to lose. I'm only on Scenario III but that should encompass the majority of gameplay features. Pros: -Does well to capture the gameplay of RPGs like Fire Emblem and Tear Ring Saga -Plenty of slots for save files. -Sprites are kind of nice -Tutorial does its job -Base Conversation feature -Adjustable difficulty Cons: -Story, while reminiscent of Fire Emblem, does not feel compelling as a result of execution -Love relationships is rushed -In-combat talking can be unpredictable and you might miss a text if you hold fast-forward after your turn -Some names could be better -*Awful font spacing -*Full Screen appears to be bug out when loading to a new map? -*Not true 720p, the framerate in battle scenes are choppy -Portrait cutouts have slight "haloing" around the edges -Music leaves a lot to be desired, sound effects are generally weak *Likely a limitation of the SRPG Engine Story/Gameplay The story is your typical enemy invades the hero's homeland and conquers the territory with bloodshed. Nothing too new but let's get to our first "issue." Emperor David catches my eye as an oddball name. While it does have old lore behind it I still find it phonetically weird and clashing a bit with some other names. The dialogue is much what you would expect. It has a slightly upgraded vocabulary (no more dastard) but the **writing is not convincing. Rather it's a bit reminiscent of shadow dragon, being based off a 1980s story, which wasn't very good. The love interest and dialogue was incredibly vague. Gave us no reason to like her and quite frankly it just negatively affected my opinion of both of them. Moreso her since our hero has some redeeming qualities. The game plays like a tactical RPG, more accurately Fire Emblem. It's pretty faithful and it seems the majority of weapons/items have infinite durability. That being said I do feel the movement of all units should be reduced by one space, everyone seems to move a bit too far. The map sizes, thus far, haven't been large at all, maps would need to be 1.3x screen size to feel "normal." The RNG is also unforgiving with weak character growths. Either it's close to some really old FE titles (Gaiden) or taking a page out of Berwick Saga. It'd also be great if we had more characters early on. Main character aside (who will get thrashed by magic) your units are rather squishy and I have to resort to forgotten/new strategies to work around it. The last time I recall having such an awful comp was in Radiant Dawn. The low growth rates don't make the characters anymore likable. A certain character got no stat raises for over half her level ups (6), pretty awful and none were defense stats either which she desparately needed. Graphics and Sound The graphics seem to use a lot of default SRPG assets which are well made in their own right. The sprites in the battle scene reminds me of better GBA FE combat sprites. Animation effects are appropriate. Unfortunately the battle scene looks as if the framerate has been reduced... likely isn't the case but it is needlessly choppy for some reason. The game window is about 720p but with the notable black borders the usable resolution is lower. The amount of black space is beyond overscan. Toggling full-screen (F1) seems to cause problems if I load into a new map. Lastly the outline of character portraits are a bit awkward. As if they were ripped from a white background instead of an alpha channel. The audio is sorely lacking. The sound effects could use more oomph but are still serviceable. The music does not do the game any favors. Sometimes it's okay like the overworld theme but otherwise I dislike it.Most tracks seem amplified beyond normalized levels (introducing clipping) or added too much compression and then amplified. The classical music, while it makes sense, is rather off-putting. Feels too slow for the pace of battle and doesn't make the game any more immersive. Conclusion For $0.99 I didn't know what to expect. It's also a "full game" on version 0.25 so that doesn't make much sense either. Most of the issues I came across are related to execution rather than the actual idea itself. I'm playing on normal+, while I don't mind it being arguably difficult I think it's that way for the wrong reasons. Anyways you could consider this "Review" a preview of what the game has to offer. **Delving into details would definitely bloat this otherwise lengthy "review" Updated 1800 EST: Clearer grammar

I have to say, I tried to enjoy this game. I really, really did. I love these kinds of games, I'm a long time veteran of Fire Emblem. But after making it to the first time I get to play as Abel, the mission appears to be broken. See, I'm currently playing this mission on easy mode (Say what you will, I've genuinely tried it on normal too), and no matter what I do the overwhelming enemy force catches up to Abel and Pascal an entire turn before they reach the secret door to unlock it and escape along the top of the map. I've replayed this mission for over an hour now and they simply do not reach it in time. The Champions on the right drop dead simply too quickly, and it's all over. They flood the back passage, and block the door before I even reach it. This is a glaring flaw, and it's not the only one I've noticed, but by far it is the biggest. There is legitimately no way around it that I've found (short of lowering the difficulty even further, but.. If I have to do that to actually win the mission, I won't have many nice things to say about your game). So far, the graphics are very reminiscent of Fire Emblem, and the gameplay itself seems fairly alright, but.. My god is your game wildly unbalanced. I'll be more than happy to provide screenshots if necessary, but I'm pretty sure you can determine the mission I'm talking about. I am sick of retrying this stage, praying that RNG takes pity on me and the champions along the right last at least one turn longer, but so far that's only happened once in the past hour, and I had to throw Pascal away to do it. Fix your balancing issues, and I might actually enjoy your game. But for right now.. It's nothing more than frustrating. I'm going to keep trying though, maybe the next missions will be better balanced. If I can even reach them. I cannot recommend your game to anybody in its current state. Edit: I gave up on beating the mission. I opted not to even bother lowering the difficulty for it, because frankly I shouldn't have to consider that to beat a mission where my objective is to RUN AWAY. It legitimately isn't possible on EASY mode. Did you even playtest this thing? Was it on the easiest difficulty? Was it Easy- mode? Because this is simply ridiculous. It takes Abel and Pascal no less than 4 turns to get the door open. If I move them as a group, and don't sacrifice Pascal, then the gryph knights (who are much stronger than either of my characters) will move in and block the door by the end of turn 3. If I split the group, sending Pascal to the right to die and slow down the knights, Abel can reach the door and open it, but he does before he can step through it. Neither outcome works, and nothing else gets me even close to escaping. I'm done, this game is being uninstalled until it sees some changes. It's a shame it's too late to get a refund for it. I will not recommend this game.

My early review of the game sums it up like this: PROS: Interesting story, amazing music, various options, nice map designs CONS: Tutorial map has a bug in which you cannot heal your character despite message saying you can, cannot full screen the game, no Mac version. I highly recommend buying this game if you are interested in what SRPG Studio can do. This games serves as an excellent benchmark!

Definitely recommend. I usually go for the sandbox non-linear... but this is such a fresh air of nostalgic gaming, made for the here & now, with a great layer of indie-polish.
