Bugs, bugs everythere. I stuck in walls, flors, doors. Some of scripts failed, so I have to kill Gonarch three times. Also it has scripted moments there you have to run from something, nothing changes and suddenly you can kill it. This is very bad game design.
The game is quite buggy and very unstable. Now I am at amission (with lots of swimming) and the game crashes every 30 seconds. it takes forever when you have to restart so many times.
hell ya
Peak.
Amongst the gold standard of remakes.
Respect to the one who voiced Gordon Freeman
I just think it's super chill of valve to allow fans to remake their games and charge money for them, Nintendo would've sued entire family bloodlines for this type of thing
This is what Half Life: Source wanted to become
One of the best single-player FPS
Absolutely fantastic game. A classic. Beaten on OLED Steam Deck. Ran great at 45FPS/90Hz.
TLDR: Black Mesa changes and tweaks a lot of things from the original that really did not need to be changed. My biggest gripes are with weapon damage, enemy health, the pacing of some chapters, and a handful of achievements that are a slog to get. If you are playing Half-Life for the first time, you would be much better off playing the original first. SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE GAME ARE IN THIS REVIEW Black Mesa is a remake of Half-Life that tweaks the original game's mechanics, overhauls graphics and sound design, adds many new sections to several chapters, completely revamps the last few chapters of the game, and includes achievements for completionists. For a fan remake, it is a very impressive project that deserves to be celebrated as a tribute to one of the most influential video games ever made. That being said, as someone who is a huge fan of the original game (around 70 hours in the original as of writing), this remake disappointed me in several aspects. By the time I was finished with my playthrough on hard, I was glad to be finished. The first issue I had with the game was the graphics and sound design. The environments do look aesthetically pleasing in many parts of the game and the sounds aren't annoying or intrusive, but they go for an extremely realistic look that takes away the character and charm from the original game's graphics/sound. That's not to say that realistic graphics are inherently bad, but Black Mesa lacks its own unique identity in that regard and feels generic with the exception of the Xen chapters. Most of the sections inside the facility are uninteresting, grey, and have sporadic lighting across different sections. Also, the soundtrack tries to go for a more epic vibe throughout the entire game which feels at odds with the original game's more grounded tone. The worst example for me was at the end of Blast Pit as I did not appreciate music suddenly blasting as I burned the tentacle monster. You don't need music to tell you how to feel in any important given section; that was the beauty of the original using music more sparingly. Next, there are the changes made to damage scaling and health. Unlike the original game, Black Mesa on hard difficulty is very generous with the amount of health and suit armor you get from charging stations, and for good reason. Black Mesa's enemies can drain your health and suit armor in moments with plenty of enemies being buffed. A great example is the bullsquid, who now fires a spread shot at you instead of one projectile. This is an issue because of the numerous times you go around a corner to be greeted by a bullsquid blast to the cranium. Enemy health is also reduced, but the changes feel entirely unnecessary and makes the game completely different to play, despite there not really being much wrong with the combat mechanics in the original game. One chapter, specifically Lambda Core, replaces many of the alien grunts from the original game with vortigaunts, making most of the chapter's difficulty entirely negated by just running around and using the shotgun on everything. The military AI is also a low point in the game's design because most of the time, they just decide to fire in the continuous direction you're in and throw several grenades at you, despite this being illogical and implying that they have infinite ammo. Rarely do they try and advance upward, which is bad because the player is left doing nothing except waiting around for an opportunity to sneak a few shots in, which isn't very fun. During one section in On A Rail, there was a point to where I waited for five minutes straight around a corner because there were six military soldiers just constantly shooting down the doorway. I eventually just decided to tank some damage because I had no other option. The Xen chapters, while much more interesting and beautiful to go through, are also significantly longer with plenty of achievements which resulted in me spending nearly half of my playtime in Xen. Specifically, Gonarch's Lair and Interloper were elongated to include more chases from Gonarch, an abundance of plug puzzles during Interloper, and an extended stay in the factory which included dodging lasers and fighting off alien controllers. Interloper was by far my least favorite chapter in the game because it was long, tedious, and had two of the most painstaking achievements which included dodging lasers for the whole chapter and not killing any vortigaunts for the entire chapter. The chapter is hours long by itself! The Xen chapters also have you finding 64 protozoans that you have to shoot across three chapters, a Cyanogen tank you have to carry around for one chapter, and several one-off achievements that essentially make half of the achievements locked behind Xen alone. If you play the game, I would recommend just not going for achievements once you get to Xen, they're not worth it. Speaking of the achievements, there are two achievements included that are very irritating: one involving carrying a hidden hat to the end of the game and another where you carry an open pizza box halfway through the game. I did not do these achievements because Black Mesa is significantly longer than the original and I did not want to awkwardly carry around items through a 12 hour game twice over. I already did it for one chapter and that alone required several loaded saves. The changes to the level design and areas are sometimes good, but I only found a couple of the chapters to be improved upon, specifically Office Complex, "We've Got Hostiles!", and Questionable Ethics. In the case of Unforeseen Consequences and Surface Tension, significant rooms are shuffled out of order and the chapters are made longer even though they were a solid length in the original. For On A Rail, they shortened the chapter greatly and removed many of the spontaneous military encounters which made the chapter engaging and exciting. Those are just a couple of examples, but if you are expecting to relive the chapters in Half-Life, you're likely in for a rude awakening. Lastly, story elements are also missing or tweaked in this fan remake. One great example is how in On A Rail, the conversation between the two soldiers has them say Gordan is "killing marines" instead of "killing my buddies." This might seem like a small change, but it completely removes the personal touch of that scene. The Nihilanth at the end of the game is also more powerful and missing the chains it had in the original, changing it from a being something which is merely a slave to greater overlords to seemingly the one in charge, completely muffling Nihilanth's role in the greater story. Black Mesa isn't a terrible game; if you are a fan of the original game, you can get some enjoyment out of seeing the classic stages and environments redone in high definition and seeing how the fans reimagined the scenes. Some changes are really good too, like making some cryptic puzzles in the original more obvious and making unfair sections like the snipers in Surface Tension more telegraphed and fun. My opinion is very mixed, but I gave it a negative rating because I'm curious as to why they didn't just make an entirely new Half-Life inspired game if they were going to tweak nearly every single aspect of the game other than the characters and settings. If you do decide to play this game though, ignoring the tedious achievements near the end of the game, playing on an easier difficulty, and having sprint always be turned on are my recommendations for getting the most enjoyment out of the game (always sprint is off by default, I couldn't imagine how slow the game would be without always sprinting!).
very fun much enjou :D

Black Mesa Source winds up being exactly what it always promised to be – a modernised, faithful recreation of a deservedly landmark first-person shooter Half-Life. Black Mesa still is very popular with some 1000 at any given time playing. The revamped Source engine makes the game easy to run on recent systems. A dual core CPU is adequate but the game needs at least a 2GB video card. 4GB RAM is adequate as well.

I have already done the game once many years ago when Xen wasn't done yet (and I see why it took so long, without spoiling much it's much bigger than the one in the original game, it is easily taking 1/4 of the full length if not 1/3). This remake is more of a reimagining if Half-Life came out in the 00's (with the HL² retcons being taken into account) rather than one that takes the ambiance of the 90's. My only gripes is that the game is seriously dark (not on the same level as Doom 3 but we're not far from it) and that the sound effects aren't as memorable (although you could say that nostalgia plays a big factor in it).
It's Half-Life. But it's not. But, F, it's Half-Life
Never played half life and having a refreshed way to play it was really nice
The BMS.exe file is reportedly (per Windows Security) carrying some sort of trojan virus. Now it will not run at all.
Almost perfect. Longest Shooter/Puzzle on the planet maybe.
First of all, I want to thanks the team behind this remaster. It's more mind-blowing than I anticipated! I probably spent half the time wandering around looking at the new environments and trying to find Easter eggs lol :D PROS: - graphics are awesome for a remaster of a 20+ year old game - the game is still linear, but last WAY longer than the original ;) - increased AI behaviour adds a welcome challenge - some HL2 QOL features as been implemented - many many Easter eggs! - "On a rail" overhaul was a welcome change :D - Xen (and beyond) overhaul is MIND-BLOWING ! CONS: - still a few bugs here and there (savegames and softlock) - you WILL die often in your first play-trough lol :D:D That is all for now ! No time to choose, get it and play it !
Is this what people thought Half-Life looked like when it first came out?
This is a great remake of the original game. The team did almost everything right, but I think Xen could have been shorter. The second half of the game is Xen now, and while I really like the atmosphere, it feels a bit repetitive with its environmental puzzles, and there isn't a whole lot of combat except for the bosses. I wasn't a fan of the chase sections either, because there is just too much RNG being thrown at you. Over all, though, I would say it's a really good game, and maybe my favorite Half-life game.
Respectful and impressive update of the original Half-Life story and gameplay. Almost as if Valve had done it themselves.
Successful Half-Life 1 remake that also ties in a bit better with HL2, this is what HL:Source should have been from the start. This mod specifically restores some of the missing Half-Life 1 content too; which makes Black Mesa the better game to play overall honestly: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2378420148
Goated as FUCK, you get to shoot aliens and government scum all while mewing the whole time which is why you don't talk at all. Tons of cool as SHIT weapons (mostly guns) that just punch and rip holes straight (gay) through whatever is at the end of that barrel. The game doesn't HOLD your stupid HAND or change your FUCKASS diaper either, if you're a lil gooncel baby then DON'T play this game because your little balls are gonna blow up buddy. 10/10
The real question is, why haven't you played this yet??? You've been missing out!
Perfect re-imagining of the original Half-Life. The level design is well thought out, some of the more tedious sections were reworked and improved, the soundtrack; although different, fits the whole theme of the game quite well. Xen is where Black Mesa shines, I just can't believe how much effort went into this part alone!
Fantastic experience. I did a little spoot
Even on the lowest difficulty, the human soldiers are bullet sponges. Aiming on a gamepad is unnecessarily difficult, and the auto-aim is a poor compensation for the poor controls, often selecting an enemy further away than the one in front of you, if it selects an enemy at all.
If a studio is remaking a game and it doesn't go to the lengths Black Mesa went to do justice to the original Half-Life, that studio is making a money-grab. This is the quintessential remake against which all other remakes should and ought to be compared. It's damn near perfect. The only complaint I have is the same I had with the original game: Xen. Where the Xen levels in the original Half-Life were sloppy and unpolished (Valve did confess to rushing them through development), the Xen levels in Black Mesa draaag on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. The mechanics and level design for Xen are improvements by every measure. However, Crowbar Collective over-corrected by making the Xen levels so long they end up outstaying their welcome. Make no mistake, Xen is great fun to play through, but it gets exhausting. I only recommend you buy and play through the original Half-Life first if you want to fully appreciate the masterpiece Crowbar Collective so lovingly put together for us to enjoy. Black Mesa is a testament to the skill and passion of the team at Crowbar Collective, and an incomparable tribute to what is arguably the greatest, most significant game ever made.
Amazing HL1 remake, must play for fans of the originals and those wanting a fresher version of the game to play the original classic.
gordon freeman my man
I enjoyed the campaign overall. The updated chapters post Xen were a mixed bag when it came to pacing. On the positive side, the 2 major boss fights were more enjoyable than the original game with a lot of QoL improvements.
Very fun, half life not a boomer game. Please play this its amazing.
This is a good modernization of HL1, which isn't to say Half-Life 1 is bad but it's definitely dated in some parts (for the record, I put down HL1 shortly before Lambda.) It's a lot of fun, but a bit glitchy at times as I very occasionally got stuck in walls or my frames would tank for brief periods. The guns feel great, it's nice that they retained a lot of original sounds, and the movement is a blast. Overall, great game!
Phenomenal. Perfect blend of nostalgia (if you played the original Half-Life back in the day) and feeling like a brand new game. Moreover it completely feels like an authentic half-life installment. Absolutely great 5/5
This is not only an outstanding remastering of THE classic FPS, this is a true tribute to one of the most amazing games ever created. Truly the devs completely outdid themselves on this one!!! MORE MORE MORE
** Game finished ** What can I say? I'm damn speechless! So many times I stopped the action and just looking around the insane beautiful art. Wow, just wow. Don't skip this one, you have to play it! By the way, I finished Nihilanth with 3% life and zero armor after multiple attempts, he was really tough. 10/10 Ratings (0-3 Don't bother @ all) (4-7 The Average) (8-10 One of the best) Posted March 23, 2024

Amazing! Need Blue Shift and Opposing Force!
I never really played the original HL1 and at this point it has been 25 years, so I chose to play the remake/reimagined version, and honestly, very happy I did. I would have probably not played this insane game otherwise and finally understand why HL is so beloved.
GOOD MORNING, AND WELCOME TO THE BLACK MESA TRANSIT SYSTEM After playing the authorized Half-Life mod by Valve, I was in a daze. The game is now known as Black Mesa. It's a remake based on the source game. What does it contain that is worth it? So I'll be pithy with the review, because I’d like to provide feedback on the content and form of the game in the old version. The remake was created by Crowbar Collective with the intention of revitalising one of the most cherished video game classics, Half-Life. They put a lot of effort into modernising the game with a new avatar, thanks to the contemporary technology and visual refinement that AAA games tend to. The textures have higher resolution, the image frequency was increased, environmental particles were put into effect, and new features were applied in terms of the dynamics of light in the environment and on objects. The AI has been honed. So, playing it at its maximum quality comes with a new experience and a sense of immersion throughout the adventure. As the game displays, even its interface has been overhauled. Although, I don’t want to get into the technical details, that's enough up to this point. On the other hand, its narrative and soundtrack are kept integral despite minor tweaks, as the technological aspects enable them. Some maps were preserved, except for their better-quality texture, incidence of objects, shading and ambience mainly. I was in awe when I discovered the planet Xen. It’s a complete refurbishment of the setting. Flora and fauna have been recreated without compromising their primal form. It looks ethereal, astral, caliginous and distant. Creation keeps pace of the narrative and gameplay. Wherever we’re, we’ll appreciate every detail. Furthermore, the game has a workshop and multiplayer modes. Sometimes developers add patches for optimization and better quality of life. If you haven't played the previous version, this is an excellent excuse to do so. You’ll notice the narrative retrocontinuity (its story and sequel) and its technology (based on the Source engine). Made by fans, and they’ve persevered to restore a vintage game. Let's hope they’re encouraged to create an alternative Half-Life, perhaps a third one. Black Mesa is often on sale, so get it and don’t pass up the possible chance to enjoy an engrossing story. RECOMMENDATION: 10/10
Half-Life was a masterpiece, but this might be my favorite version of the original. The original is fun in an arcade way, but this one takes HL1's story, and HL2's gameplay, and makes this juicy baby.
The perfect remake all of the times.
Can’t believe I haven’t played this sooner. Very tastefully done remake, the deviations from the original are almost all great, it looks SO GOOD, it feels like Half Life, seeing Black Mesa this way is amazing. The music is hella dope, too. If you like Half Life, don’t dismiss this.
I will leave the cat here, so that everybody who passes by can pet it and give it a thumbs up and awards /> フ | l /` ミ_xノ / | / ヽ ノ │ | | | / ̄| | | | | ( ̄ヽ_ヽ)__) \二つ
Half Life but polished. The game itself is a more refined version of the original game with improved visuals, audio, AI, HL2 pickup mechanics, and with less filler bits. The game cuts out some of the lesser bits in the original half life (such as the boring puzzle sequence of "On A Rail") and overall makes progression less difficult with a more streamlined map. Now, the bad stuff... They managed to make ladders much more difficult in this game compared to the original (which was already bad). Also as stated before, the levels/maps are tweaked for a more streamlined experience. You will lose a bit of he authenticity if you decide to play this game first. Overall, if you are new to Half Life, I would maybe reccomend starting with this game over the original because of all the listed improvements, however, you will lose some of the puzzle elements of the original, which is sort of what made the game stand out. Player experience all in all is improved upon, making it a bit easier for newcomers enjoy, while still having some variety to make it worth playing both the original and this game.

I'm just gonna say it - Black Mesa is superior to Half-Life.
I NEED HELP IAM A NEWBIE PLAYING THIS
Black Mesa is a game that became too painfully uninteresting for me to finish, having oddly monotonous pacing and level design changes that constantly drags the game down. It has gameplay that almost never plays to the strengths of either the original Half-Life or Half-Life 2 while also being strangely unoptimized. The only parts of the game that I really enjoyed playing were Office Complex, Questionable Ethics, Surface Tension, and Forget About Freeman. There's a lot of effort in display in its recreation of HL1 set pieces, good-looking graphics, all-new soundtrack, and revamped Xen chapters—but ultimately it's a tremendous yet unrefined effort that isn't outright awful but isn't all that great either. If you're looking to play HL1, just buy the original version.
So you take the original half life that was already a great game 10 out of 10 when it came out and you fix the later levels in Xen and you have a master piece called black mesa. 11 out of 10 just buy it and play it on hard.
Black Mesa is not just a game; it’s a time machine. It transports you back to the iconic Black Mesa Research Facility with a fresh coat of paint and a modern twist. The game, a fan-made homage to the legendary Half-Life, has been crafted with a meticulous eye for detail and a deep respect for the original. From the moment you step into the HEV suit of Gordon Freeman, you’re greeted with mind-blowing graphics and effects that breathe new life into the Source Engine. The environments are incredibly detailed, from the top-secret labs to the harsh desert landscapes, and even the interdimensional leaps to Xen. It’s a visual feast that honors the legacy of Half-Life while standing tall as its own entity. The gameplay remains as engaging as ever, with a completely reimagined and refined single-player campaign. The classic enemies have been updated with new features and engaging AI, making each encounter a thrilling challenge. The arsenal at your disposal feels satisfyingly familiar, yet fresh, with military hardware, scientific prototypes, and, of course, the iconic crowbar. What truly sets Black Mesa apart is the all-new soundtrack and voice acting, which create a more immersive experience than ever before. The game also boasts 50 fun and challenging achievements, along with 10 iconic maps from the Half-Life universe, ready for exploration and combat. Black Mesa is a remarkable feat that stands as a testament to the passion and dedication of the Crowbar Collective. It’s a game that not only pays tribute to Half-Life but also enhances and expands upon it, offering both veterans and newcomers an experience that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new. Whether you’re revisiting the facility or stepping in for the first time, Black Mesa is an essential play for any fan of the genre.
one of the most insane games ive ever played lmao
Ah Gordon Freeman!
