Dying repeatedly in increasingly ridiculous ways; The Game
IM GOING INSANE.
Rain World is truly a unique game. The art style is beautiful and immerses you into its world right from the start. The gameplay is tough and every encounter feels intense and unpredictable, but it's incredibly satisfying when you figure out how to survive, find shelters and start planning your journey. Which is certainly easier and even more enjoyable with a friend. Everything in this game speaks mystery, from the map to the lore and purpose of it all. You need to be ready to die a lot, especially if you're exploring the map for the first time, some areas have tougher enemies and in greater numbers than others, and that can be a little frustrating but its part of the experience, as every death (either by unfortunate events or by the rain) can make you learn a new part of the map, a way to avoid trouble, or maybe the best path that will make you reach the shelter in time, all while finding food to survive the cycle. Once you get the hang of it, this game becomes extremely addicting! did i mention you can be a cute baby slugpup ?
FIVE PEBBLES MAKE ME WANNA CRY AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Very good at simulating the ecosystem!
i love how creative and brutal the monsters and regions are the music is nice, lots of cool movement tech. makes me wanna bite chunks of my arms out but is well worth the price esp now bc on a huge sale.
as of writing this i have 220 hours and a quarter of them are on artificer help
Your honor, he's just a lil guy
scug game :)
You are a slugcat. Slugcat is not a hero. Slugcat is a animal, prey and predator. No enemies, only animals, and you are not the only prey. They learn and grow. Be nice to them and you might even tame or befriend even the fiercest beasts. No magic powerups, way to become stronger is learning the surprisingly complex movement techs and the weakness of each animal. There is a story, follow the where the little yellow camera points. You might need to sleep to get more "karma" so doors open. Greet the remains of a ancient civilization. Don't eat the glowies on the beach. Check what the yellow friend shows you in pictures. You can help. Or leave. DLC has more content than base game. Better endings for the base 2 slugcats. Many more slugcats with special behaviours set on different ages of the strange world. Become a slugcat. NOW.
one of the cats has cancer and is stupidly hard 10/10 would recommend
Came for the amazing pixel art and environment, stayed for the Buddhist philosophy.
I can't wait to see what this next area has in store for my cute and friendly slugcat... I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS. I HATE SPIDERS.

Despite the Perils Along the Way This Big Mean World May Bestow Upon Me. A Silly Little Goober I Remain >:3
such gentle rain!! ok go read the actual review pages.
refunded. yes, this is a positive review. this game... is a work of art. there's absolutely breathtaking visuals to be found here, and it provides some of the best environmental design and storytelling I've ever seen. It's also just a treasure trove of creativity. I refunded because it quickly became clear this is an extremely hardcore experience, on a genre (platformers) I frankly don't super enjoy. Just because -I- don't like it, doesn't mean I can't recognize how good of a game this is, and it doesn't really have much in terms of faults beyond personal taste or preferences on my end. this is, put simply, a great game that I don't like playing. If you like difficult and punishing platformers, however, this game is a must. It's crazy how good it is.

this game dominated my waking life like a toxic lover and thus i cannot recommend it. if you value your time stay far from this product

My friend verbally assaults me while I play this game. I think it makes me a better player.
There is no other game, to my knowledge, that does what Rain World does. There is no game that can create an environment this alien, alive, and enthralling, besides Rain World. This game will not be to everyone's liking, especially considering it will make you feel small and helpless. But the experience of learning, overcoming, and adapting to this world is so immense, that there is no reason you shouldn't at least try.
IF I COULD RELIVE ANY GAME IN ITS ENTIRETY, IT WOULD BE RAIN WORLD. Playing through Rain World was one of the greatest gaming experiences of my life and I am grateful for it and its DLC expansion, Downpour. This game is not for everyone, yet everyone should play it. It is tough-as-nails for beginners and its world does not respect you; this is what separates Rain World from others on the market. It is barely even a “game”, it’s more like an “opportunity” – an opportunity to shed all preconceived notions of your place in this world and to adopt, adapt and overcome on a primal level – to be naught but a spec on the food chain. Rain World forces you to learn its rules where, if you choose to ignore them, you will die repeatedly. It’s not uncommon for players to abandon the game very early, only to return years later with the goal of progressing. The progression in Rain World is unlike any other game I have played – there are no tangible upgrades outside of the expanse of your intelligence of the game’s ecosystem and mechanics. Furthermore, the absence of any meaningful tutorials/guidance allow the player to forge their own path and learn when it’s important. This is one of the most effective means of encouraging progression that I’ve ever experienced – uninformed players will die, pushing them to learn, to survive, to progress. And you WILL die. It’s okay, that’s part of the learning process. Another thing to mention is that any and all mechanical knowledge will originate from experimentation, accident and intuition. If you know, you know. All that mention of discovery and I haven’t mentioned the sheer MOUNTAIN of lore and thought-provoking material that’s waiting to be uncovered by those determined and mindful enough. There are particular unmentionable regions, interactions and events in Rain World that will leave a mark on you in one way or another – most often times you’ll push yourself further to experience more in the name of discovery, something many games nowadays fail to do outside of “objective markers” and the like. Rain World is hard. If you don’t like it at first, just give yourself some time to digest what you’ve experienced before returning, trust me you won’t regret it. Hell, I’m struggling to think of negatives outside of difficulty since you can feasibly go anywhere anytime so long as you’re informed on how to do so. tl;dr Rain World is goated. Buy it. Also buy the Downpour DLC, it’s more than double the size of base game Rain World and is SO worth it.

God damn this game changed me, this game is like if souls-likes were made to just cause pain.
"I wish somebody would make a World" Rain:
psychological horror
I always wondered what it would be like to live in the hood
The lore is fun, I'm surprised there aren't more dark souls explained esque video essays. Very meticulously crafted world, alot can be inferred from just what you see in the game, I enjoy spending my free time thinking about its themes philosophically. Though the beginning is mostly aimless and brutal, I encourage those reading this to brave the storm and play Rain World through to completion.
The first time I got frustrated and quit. I'm not very good at exploring without guidance, so my way to play this game was to use maps and guides, and it was still very rewarding. I savescummed my way through the Hunter plotline because there is no way in hell I would be able to complete it in the intended way, and I still suffered enough to be happy when I managed to get him to destination. The environment and all the creatures behaving independently is impressive and always fresh. I hope there's a discount on Downpour someday so that I can play the rest of the plotlines. Also hoping for a Ukrainian translation so that I can recommend it in the local community.
Rain World is not a metroidvania, it's not an action platformer; it's always been an *ecosystem simulator*. I'd recommend it to every biologist or naturalist or ecology enthusiast out there. If you mistake this game for what it's not, you'll be very frustrated - all your intentions will be dashed and you'll give it up quickly, but if you're willing to accept and learn from failure, you'll find a beautiful intricate experience like no other. You're a little lost animal in an unforgiving world. Endeavor as such. Take your time. Test out your environment. The gameplay loop is relatively simple - fill up on food, evade predators, find a safe place to sleep before bone-crushing rain pounds you to dust. When resources run out or you feel ready, trek to find the next gate and move on. ALWAYS CARRY A SPEAR. Eventually the wacky movement will become second nature, you'll move with confidence, death becomes but a mild inconvenience, because like sleep like death, you wake up again. Whether you want to or not. Good luck!

i have never been eaten by a lizard so many times in a row, and still wanted to come back and get eaten by a lizard again
Artificer campaign taught me one thing: GENOCIDE AND MURDER IS TOTALLY OK!! 10/10, do recommend
no one told me this was a horror game bloody lizards jumpscaring me.
i bought this game because of the amazing atmosphere and enviroment it plunged me into. little did i know this is not my kind of game. in my opinion, it lacks a goal, which is the main reason why i have not beaten it yet and find it so difficult to play further. this is just my opinion, so if you do like games without clear goals or tutorials then play it i'm sorry rain world, you're a good game, but just not the right good game for me

I'll be real with you - it will crush you, destroy you at every given moment. Wildlife is unforgiving (platforming too) and you'll die again and again and again. You will be frustrated, lost, you will not know what the hell you are supposed to do. And yet this is the most unique and memorable experiences, hands down. It's fine if you find the game difficult and unfair, but do try to see it as a passion project, where you are supposed to be a little part of the ecosystem and not a big hero of the day. (DLC is strongly recommended. It made the game 3 times bigger!!! Maybe even more if you include challenges and expeditions.) But uh.. Wait for the sales I guess?? 'Cuz this high price feels like a steal: the base game is quite small. Even with all my love for the game - that's a little too much.
i love hunting my friends for sport :)
Slugpup SLUGPUP!
I went into this game entirely blind, which I'd honestly highly recommend doing. For the first few hours of playing this game I absolutely hated it. I felt like I kept failing over and over again and was lost on what to do. I got frustrated and put it down for a few days. I'm glad I did, I feel like if I had forced myself to keep playing I wouldn't have enjoyed it. Coming back to it I felt like I understood how to play it better and had a far easier time. I'd recommend focusing on figuring out the gameplay first before the story. Stay in that first little area and get used to the movement system, figure out how to handle creatures. When you feel confident there dive on in and really start to explore. Personally I looked up minimal guides, mainly just looked them up for the sake of figuring out where to go (For me, it was a matter of wanting a bit more direction so I could enjoy the game more). Even with doing this I'd recommend just wandering around. The map is massive, you'll often stumble into story elements or progression areas without looking for them. If you can't get through an area turn around and look elsewhere. There is often an easier way to get to where you want to go. Not always, but very frequently this is the case. The art in this game is incredible. So is the story, it might not feel like there's much of one at first but there most certainly is. If you're not enjoying it definitely just step away for a little bit and come back when you're in a different head space. I found myself playing in 30 minute increments then before I knew it I'd be on this game for hours. It's not a game for everyone, but in my opinion this is truly an incredible game.
SAVE YOURSELF. ive played for 4 days and I have 18 hours of play time, its too fun.
A WORLD OF SIMULATED PERFECTION I need to say you will also probably never play a game harder than Rain World, I'm not joking. Why is so hard? Because you're a slugcat in a world that is a simulated ecosystem where you need to eat while also not getting eaten. You will die alot. Here is a montage of the various ways you can: https://youtu.be/rkFZGbwTT-0 They have creative difficulty settings if you're still afraid, by picking the type of slugcat, a yellow one is a herbivore that doesn't need to eat as much per day, has fewer enemies, and less aggro. The red hunter type can hold two spears, only eats meat and has more enemies. I went for the default because I always go for the intended pure experience. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE GAME? I can't tell you because I never finished the game. The game doesn't tell you what to do, you are just a slugcat who just needs to survive, I don't even know if there is an ending, I didn't look up anything on the game to again get the pure experience. But I will say this it is the only game I quit playing and still recommend 100%. Rainworld is that unique. I have so many experiences trying to survive in a world of plants that you don't know are enemies, different tiers of lizards that start from can't climb, to becoming invisible snipers. You have vultures that if you wear a mask of one you killed, they will not attack you. You can befriend animals, trick them, use them to traverse, panic when it rains, panic when you find explosives and get them stolen, and panic every time you see a new creature and wonder how it will kill you. It's a simulated world of pain and suffering and with only 10 hours and maybe getting 25% or 50% of the way through the game I still remember how crazy it can be. I hope to find the time and maybe use a guide to help me as I want to return to the world of Rain. 10/10 WOULD RAGE ALL OVER AGAIN. Just get it and enjoy being lost, afraid and taking part in a game that is so brutally realistic, it makes you glad you're a smart human and not a dumb slugcat. https://youtu.be/AO8d5TPXjj4

Masterpiece. Easily one of the best game I ever played. Sure, the game is challenging, and the story may be unclear at the beginning. But the effort developers put in this game is deserving all kinds of appreciation. I can write many things about how great is this game, but you should just try it yourself. And yeah, this game provides best experience if you don't use any external sources of information for your playthrough. Also, you don't need any platforming skills to start playing it, and this part of the game don't require you to be a tryhard.
WAWA!!!!!!
what
It's a slug-eat-bug world
Pain
A very fun and unique, but also very difficult game
A slugcat and a lizard crawl into a bar. The slugcat flees the bar. To find the bartender on the other side. Rain World is a game of wits. A game of patience. A game of happenstance, where your well-being isn't just as meaningless as everything else's, it's LESS meaningless. Yet, the humble slugcat dares not to give up, as the world without rain is a beautiful one. It's difficult to be motivated at the start, when there isn't much to lose and the objective is unclear... but after the first area, this game's deceptively simple systems blossom into a rare dance to the gorgeous environment of old. An incredibly memorable game, one that perhaps doesn't want to be played.
I dont even remember spending 16 hours on this thats how good it is
Its difficulty leads you to frequently and subconsciously take moments to appreciate not being dead. During these moments, your focus broadens, and you see the world around you. Details in the cobbled stone you walk realize themselves, and the lives of all those who have ever trodden it and ever will manifest in your attention. You've worked so hard to get here-- was it worth it? Does that question even mean anything, considering here isn't anywhere special at all and an experience being worth anything is a ridiculous concept anyways? The experience of Rain World is deeply allegorical. Sometimes a blow is too much, a failure too humiliating, that you make that judgement call. Its not worth it anymore. You try in vain for any glimpse of the goal that you assume is out there, but all you see is overcast skies and empty black tunnels. There is no guide, there are no rails, so for all you know the path you're treading leads nowhere at all. Succeeding in Rain World requires you to realize a new perspective on the worth of experience. In these moments, these moments of reflection, of peace, where the music swells for nothing, nowhere, nobody at all, you realize just how worth it it was.
Pain World
I've played this game since before 1.5 and Downpour, and still keep coming back to it as my friends discover it for the first time for an experience they'll never forget. You control the unenviable after they are separated from their family and habitat by a rain storm, washing them through a labyrinth of still-functioning infrastructure that fights against the reclamation of nature. You don't know where you are, you don't know how to get back, and the strange yellow creature that greets you after you gain control gives you scarce, fleeting advice before you're eaten by a hissing green monster. ... then you try again. The gameplay loop has you learning a deceptively simple three-button control scheme as you struggle to feed yourself, hibernate, and progress a mysterious counter that seems to gate your progress through the game; You'll quickly begin to appreciate that while survival for the regrettable slugcat is harsh, the world isn't about you- The meticulously detailed and foreign environments you traverse feature functional ecosystems that you are merely a conveniently sized snack for, not an explicit target. This is where the game can be polarizing. It's very old-school in it's design and is, as the kids say, "Nintendo Hard". It's design philosophy of tossing you into an alien world and leaving you to learn it's rules extends from the more advanced movement techniques to unclear UI elements. You do get a guide that will attempt to point you in the right direction, but they are driven by procedural behaviors and can be inconsistent at best. I do respect that some folks won't enjoy this game, but for anyone that is shying away at my previous description: Just wait a moment- The difficulty is important. I won't tell you that you MUST play this game regardless of your personal tastes, but if you can pay out the patience the game demands, it will absolutely pay you back. Rain World is a game with a very carefully crafted narrative and intent to its environmental story-telling, with moments and revelations that still to this day give me chills and make me tear up a bit; And that's not including the Downpour DLC. If you still want the story without the difficulty, the game has always had mods and now includes official quality of life features to adjust it as you need. If you want a classic styled cinematic platformer with a rich cast of creatures that simulate a fascinating ecosystem, absolutely, cannot recommend enough. If you want a deeply introspective and surprisingly philosophical story that thrives on your actual struggles as a player, this game will live in your head for decades to come. Oh and there's official co-op support. Just be sure to go through the effort of setting up Parsec (and maybe reWASD for sharing keyboard inputs) as my experience with Steam Remote Play is... inconsistent. For any of my friends I forced to play this game: I'm not sorry :)

Hardest game since 2017❌❌ Made me the Hardest since 2017✅✅
This. F**king. Game. I can comfortably say that beating Rain World is one of my most prized accomplishments when it comes to gaming. Not only because it's very difficult in a refreshingly unique way - more on that later - but also because the spiritual significance of the game, the ending in particular, left an ever-aching scar on my heart that refuses to heal even years later. There's this general belief that game journalists suck at games; I don't want to get into that right now, but I honestly believe that Rain World simply blindsided a lot of its more mainstream reviewers with its unconventional control scheme and strange, dynamic difficulty. This isn't a 2D platformer. The slugcat cannot really jump like we're used to; instead, it has a handy set of other movement abilities, and learning them in spite of your instincts is required to get anywhere. And this is on top of the other unusual design choices. The world is incredibly interconnected and if you're persistent enough, there's nothing really preventing you from doing stuff out of order and even skipping a lot of the game. No worries though - the chances of you doing that on accident are very low. What really makes Rain World shine, however, is the way its difficulty works. Almost all hard games can be learned, and that's what you're expected to do. Learn the steps and execute the dance. But Rain World shuffles things up every time you die. Enemies appear in different locations. A route you took last time might be inaccessible this time around due to a bunch of lizards fighting for turf. Sure, you could try sneaking past. Or even fighting them. But as a general rule you're not a fighter; you have to use a mixture of trickery, stealth, being quick on your feet and occasional violence to get by. In other words, you're squarely in the lower half of the food chain. Yes, there are creatures that are below you that you can hunt and consume, but most things want to make a snack of you instead. And they will. Oh yes, they will. The most memorable and glorious moments of the game will be where you will have barely escaped with your life over and over again in a single cycle and miraculously managed to find shelter just before the rain came. And as you start to really understand the workings of the world and the abilities of your slugcat, moments such as those will come more and more often. That's its true power. On top of all that, Rain World has a spiritual component - one that is not immediately clear, but as you keep playing, you'll begin the true significance of a lot of stuff. I don't think it's practical to completely unravel the plot by yourself due to the insane things you need to do to get some pieces of info, though; I had to consult the wiki to really understand. But it's fine - you'll still get a very satisfying and emotional experience if you go only with what you can find by yourself. And above all else - it's a very, very unique game, even by indie standards. Difficult, yes. But possible to learn and to master. Complex. Obtuse, perhaps; but so incredibly satisfying. Not for everyone, for sure - and yet, I implore you to check it out. I'm incredibly grateful to the Universe that I did and refused to give up. I HAVE A CRIPPLING SLUGCAT ADDICTION
TRIPLE AFFIRMATIVE No Significant Harassment, Chasing Wind, Secluded Instinct... Click here -> to see all 503,772 Iterators NSH: Connection terminated. I'm sorry to interrupt you, Erratic Pulse, if you still even remember that name, But I'm afraid you've been misinformed. You are not here to receive a gift, nor have you been called here by the Iterator you assume, although, you have indeed been called. You have all been called here, into a labyrinth of sounds and smells, misdirection and misfortune. A labyrinth with no exit, a maze with no prize. You don't even realize that you are trapped. Your lust for a solution has driven you in endless circles, chasing every new breakthrough in some unseen chamber, always seeming so near, yet somehow out of reach, but you will never find them. None of you will. This is where your story ends. NSH: And to you, little creature, who by some miracle got caught in the crossfire, although there was a way out planned for you, I have a feeling that's not what you want. I have a feeling that you are right where you want to be. I am remaining as well. I am nearby. This place will not be remembered, and the memory of everything that started this can finally begin to fade away. As the agony of every tragedy should. NSH: And to the other members of your kind, little creature, be still and accept your new life. For most of you, I believe there is peace and perhaps more waiting for you after the smoke clears. Although, for one of you, your two Slugpups are waiting for you in the darkest section of Rubicon, so don't keep the Void Worms waiting, Artificer. NSH: Looks to the Moon, if you can hear me, I knew you would return as well. It's in your nature to protect the innocent. I'm sorry that on that cycle, the cycle you were forced to suffer immense pain as you collapsed under your own weight, no one was there to lift you up into their arms the way you lifted others into yours, and then, what became of you. I should have known you wouldn't be content to disappear. I couldn't save you then, so let me save you now. It's time to rest - for you, and for those you have carried in your arms. This ends for all of us. End communication.
