Bought the game around a year ago when it was very rough and new to it's Early
Access period. The developer was very responsive and seemed to have a good grasp
on where he was taking the game. Played a little back then, enjoyed it, but
there wasn't a lot to do and the world was fairly barren.
Fast forward to today (a year later), and I re-install the game and check it out
with a new character. Immediately things "felt off", needlessly cumbersome, even
annoying. Had an axe, a survival knife, and some other items on me (including
canned food), but now it requires a can opener to eat the food. Wait - neither
an axe nor a survival knife (both tempered steel) could get me into an aluminum
can?
So I overlooked those minor things (despite eating during the early game being
super important), and moved on. Another ~4 hours later I had some decent gear on
me, a number of good sized backpacks, a 9mm and a 5.56mm weapons with small
amounts of ammo. I visit a trader to unload some stuff I wanted to sell, then
head back to a nearby POI... on the way a bear spawns literally right next to me
and proceeds to kill me in 2-3 swipes. Didn't even have time to get my 9m out
and try to down it. And of course, it was faster than I was even while I tried
to evade it between nearby trees. Zero chance of survival.
The game *has* promise, but it seems to be mired in serious design and/or
implementation issues. Dangerous spawns should *never* pop in right next to you.
Edged weapons should open cans of food at the cost of some durability. Melee
combat shouldn't be so hit-and-miss, not knowing where to aim on the enemy's
body.
I'll probably pick it up again in another year, but for now.. I'm not going to
give it a recommended status. Just too many frustrating, nonsensical, and
unfinished bits to be able to call it a game worthy of playing. That's today,
tomorrow may be different.

Definately a 10 out of 10. Reminds me of h1z1 survival. Would play it everyday
if i could. Its in my top 10 games of all time for sure. Keep up the hard work!
Thank you for all the hard work you put in to make it even better.
Couple things id love to see would be:
motorcycle - with satchel bags
tow-truck
maybe some other types of clothes
All in all very well established and amazing game! Great work!

Enjoyed dropping in and running around / "surviving" in an open world survival
game, and since the redesign / update to the systems; it has become even more
enjoyable, at least to me.

This game is a blast. It has a good mixture of the best feature from other
zombie games and the developer has shared an exciting road map for the game. For
what is in the game now you are in for a treat and it will only get better over
time.

Positive:
This game is really great. If you are looking for a non-multiplayer open-world
survival horror, definitely try this out. The gameplay is methodical and lonely,
similar to that of Day-Z or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The player needs to manage their
inventory, health, nourishment, etc. The player will also need to find a place
to settle down and build a base to store their items, and the building system to
get this done is quite good, considering this isn't a building game. The enemies
keep you on your toes and the difficulty is fair, and the wide variety of enemy
types keeps monotony to a minimum. Zombies do not spawn indoors often, but they
can and will in certain areas, this keeps the player from feeling safe when
looting and adds atmosphere. The bandits are well designed, a bit stupid but
they will get the drop on you if you mistake them for scavs or underestimate
them. Overall it is nothing groundbreaking, but it is a very solid entry in the
Zombie Survival Horror scene.
Negative:
As an early access title, this game is not without its issues. Most notably, and
the one which affected me the most, is the save system. Quicksaves are more
reliable in this game than hard saves, I had several hard saves revert
themselves to previous saves after quitting the game, even though I'm one of
those freaks that overwrites twice before closing a game.
Speaking of closing the game, when you close this game the following things
happen in your saved world:
-Any map markers made with GPS will permanently burn onto the map, they cannot
be removed.
-All random containers reset, even if you are standing on them.
-Any active objectives obtained from Laptops will disappear. (Reverting to an
old save does not bring it back, but you could go back to when you examined the
Laptop)
Some world-terrain and flavor items such as the corners of vehicles, curtains,
and trees can block bullets in unexpected ways, forcing the player to waste ammo
shooting invisible barriers when an enemy is near these objects.
Some weapons are far more common than others, which is expected. However, two
guns stand out as way too common. These are the M9 and the hunting rifle. I
really shouldn't be opening a supposedly high tier military crate that I fought
a boss to access and see two weapons that I find multiple of in literal trash
bags and in zombies pockets every time I go raiding.
Aside from these, there are not many negatives. This is an extremely promising
game that comes at a fantastic deal, even if it's not on sale. It is also being
updated regularly, one came out within my first few hours of play. I look
forward to its development and future improvements!

This game takes all the great things from Project Zomboid, State of Decay and
DayZ and makes them better, I can't wait to see what the devs do, the road map
looks really promising and there's enough content in the game right now to keep
you busy for hours, I lost a full day without realising.
The game is fantastic in its current state and well worth a purchase! The devs
are currently working on a multiplayer that will sky rocket this game if it's
done right.

I love this game. Superior to Deadpoly in every regard.
Create a character, assign him or her a profession, and enter a world of the
zombie Apocalypse. You'll need food and water in order to survive; find weapons
and clothing and armor (or scavenge and try to craft things for yourself), and
try to live one more day in the landscape. Build your own base and go looking
for better gear and a vehicle to drive. Be wary of irradiated areas as too much
radiation will impact your health. Luckily you can find things like first aid
items that will help recover health, and rad pills to restore your radiation
meter. You can also find things like certain respirators in which you will need
filters; these masks help radiation resistance. It gets dark at night so you'll
need a flashlight and batteries. There's night vision goggles you can find as
well. Beware there is a dark side to humanity in that you can find NPC human
bandits that will attack you. If you've got the gun and the nerve, you can fight
them back.
Along the way you might find friendly scavengers who you can hang with and
they'll provide added firepower or melee combat and attack hostiles that are
nearby. You really can't interact with them much at present. Consider them like
a friendly NPC spawn that comes and goes. But you can find wandering traders and
trading posts and you can trade for things. There's even safe zones where you
can find traders and some friendly NPCs if you need a breather.
What's more to say? Check out "Let's Play Surroundead" if you want more detail.
But for now, despite some glitches, it is mostly an awesome game. But the
developers are working to make the game better.
And I can't state it more enough. I played Deadpoly before Surroundead and, at
the time, Surroundead was thought to be made by the same group of developers
because of the assets that were used. Deadpoly has since used a different
development and, well, I absolutely hate Deadpoly now. But others seem to like
it, and that's ok. I won't trash the game just to troll their fanbase. It's not
cool.
So try Surroundead. I think you'll like it. The only bad side at present,
besides some glitches, is there's no multiplayer...yet.

I do not understand these positive reviews at all. This game suffers from
tedious mechanics, and a featureless/clunky UI, and terrible combat. Melee
combat is just awful, even more so with crawlers. The ranged weapon system is a
solid WTF as you have not only juggle ammo, but ammo magazines as well. why??
Inventory management is a chore without any QOL features at all. The game is
just so much of a chore to play that it negates any fun or immersion. On a
positive note, the building was alright and the crafting was OK other than not
using materials in proximity in storage being the only negative there.

I played deadpoly when it came out. Loved it and waited about a year before
playing again to see the progress and star again...was sad about the results.
Saw this game being compared as the better version...it's the same style but
1000000 light years ahead in EVERY WAY !
I just Rage Quit the game after my first death (sneaky bear attack you know...)
but Im launching it right again ! Highly recommend if you want a relax game to

This is a fun game which is surprisingly addictive.
I have shied away from low-polygon games, not particularly attracted by the
graphics, but I also enjoy the survival/creative/fps genre (11,000 hours in
Fallout 4, for example) so after watching a preview on YT I thought I'd give
Surroundead a try..... and a week later I became hooked!
Sure, it is EA and I completely accept that it is going to (hopefully) evolve
and have rough edges smoothed, but even as it is right now, it is very
enjoyable.
The graphics: what you see is what you get.....low-poly, but there is
considerable detail included. The vehicles, for example, are not just rectanglar
shapes....they are recognisable as certain makes, in many cases.
The weapons also look like chunky versions of the real thing.
Abandoned shops are littered (literally) with stuff, some interactive, some not.
Driveable vehicles are very well done and easily controlled and the interaction
is smooth.
The most impressive aspect, a combination of graphics and sound, is the
depiction of the weather.
Storms are fantastic....thunder, lightning, strong wind, heavy rain....all
beautifully done. One detail is that rain does NOT come through roofs or
ceilings but DOES come through open windows and doors. Kudos to the dev for that
touch.
Gameplay can be set at various difficulty levels, from peaceful (scattered
zombies other than at Infestation locations) right through to very hard.
At the moment there is a fair bit to explore and sufficient depth to allow you
to create, set up a base and do your thing.
A good little game and at the current price, it's a steal.

Fun game for a few hours, but gets boring relatively quick since no multiplayer
/ actual in-depth content, the fact this game is literally just purchased assets
slapped together (there's a legit website with multiple games with these) ON TOP
OF the developer being an absolute arse is just sad. Just save your money he has
massive ego trips for little to no reason and takes it on his paying customers.

The game has a really good start, but the difficulty jump in end level areas
(like FOB Bravo) is way too high compared to previous content. Really need more
content in the "middle", and a more reasonable sound fall-off for using loud
guns vs drawing the entire zombie population of the military base. Feels like
there needs to be more fleshed out in the "middle" content wise.

The combat and AI actually make the game so boring, what's the point in sneaking
if they hear me from 40 yards away, and whats the point of not being able to
block and pretty much have to take damage with every Z encounter, unless you
hit, sprint backwards(in hopes you don't get hit), and repeat, then you're gonna
die by the time you fight 3 zombies, which isn't engaging combat, I've come back
to this game a few times but that's one thing that hasn't changed, maybe a block
feature where you take minuscule damage, and a push feature that knocks down
zombies instead of staggering them for .5 seconds

This game has absolutely massive potential.
Played for 15 hours straight, which I haven't done on any game for years.
Fair few annoying bugs, to be expected with an early access title, but nothing
to game breaking.
Very impressed and hope to see this flourish into something even more
spectacular.

DayZ meets Unturned, but better than you think. Fully and easily adjustable
in-game settings aplenty including spawn ratios and delays, item rarity or
commonality, speed of draining/filling meters... practically everything about
this game is customizable. Can play hardcore-type games if you choose, or set it
up so that your keep your inventory on death and allow you to respawn (might
have to run all the way back to your choice vehicle, though!! Tip - take the
time to drive a couple over to your base if they are close by, just in case).
Combat system is solid, and feels good. Great crafting system, too. Can place
found 'buildables' wherever you choose, can craft many of the findable
buildables yourself like storages and walls, and includes a modular building
system that uses the standard floors/walls/roofs/stairs setup. It's an up and
comer, for sure. Its only two downsides ive found so far is that currently, it
is Single Player only and some areas of the map are unfinished as of writing
this. But that's changing in the future. I'm still having a blast with it,
though. A few characters in to learn the game, and now Ug Lee reigns in my
little area of the map. Got my base with some nice metal fences and palisade
walls, a Bunker to hide in, lots of storage, a couple vehicles, even a little
campground, lol. 100% worth checking out!! Highly recommend if this type of game
up your alley!!!

Asked the chat in their Discord for an update on multiplayer capabilities.
received so much negativity back that I quit the server and do not want to
support creators that alienate their player base. Worst interaction I have ever
had with game developers. I have screen shots to show the harassment they wrote.
I may have put 13+ hours in but I wish I could take back every minute. With so
many other choices for zombie survival games go elsewhere. This is not the game
you want for sure. underdeveloped rip off copies of unturned, deadpoly. oh and
like I mentioned do not ask questions in their discord about multiplayer you
will be replied to with several negative comments.

Played enough to see the potential, until....
I witness the developer treating the players like crap. Confidently, in front of

Save your money, stick to Deadpoly. I see why their team split.

The game does have some potential, but it's just too rough at the moment to
really recommend. That might change later down the line, but considering it's a
solo developer doing it on the side it probably won't be anytime soon.
Even after the most recent update (Halloween 2023) Melee still feels clunky.
It's a bit better than before, and zombies don't seem to want to merge with your
character anymore when chasing/attacking you.
At least the gunplay feels solid enough, but you sort of need both systems to
feel alright in such a game.
The game is also most likely slapped together with asset packs (most likely
Polygon from synty store). Kinda understandable, but means it also feels more
generic and can come off as an asset flip.
While playing I've also just felt anxious about my vehicle and placables just
vanishing on me, as it has happened a couple of times already, deleting a ton of
equipment.
There is also a fair bit of bugs, like character equipment clipping into your
camera while in first person view (which you kinda want to do while in combat),
zombies getting stuck, not attacking or spawning ontop of places they should
not.
Another aspect which makes the game feel a bit rough is zombies not being
persistent between sessions; Zombies and loot both respawn when reloading a
save, a lesson learned when I had to save and quit within a small town...
You also have to join their discord if you want to report bugs or provide
feedback. I really can't be bothered with joining the discord for every single
game there is, so I end up joining none at all. At least some folks in the steam
discussions take the time to forward some bug reports and such to the discord.
Overall, eh... On sale it might be worth a try, and maybe another year or two
it'll be a solid experience. Not sure how much more I'll play of this, and I
might delete or revisit the review later down the line if it has improved

The melee is god awful, which is kinda a big deal for the early game. I mean...
A zombie game should probably have ANY melee, but its just unplayable unless you
have a sledge hammer. If they make melee worth half a shit this game will be a
fun game with friends whenever multiplayer releases but picking between this and
Project Zomboid is a no brainer.

This game is Amazing. For the price of the experience this is dollar for dollar
the best zombie survival sandbox I have ever played. And the developer for the

If you're looking for a surprisingly relaxing sandbox zombie survival game this
is the one. I also appreciate the attention to detail given to the weapons (and
that the dev knows the difference between a clip and a magazine). The guns
actually feel great and they're all modeled after their real world counterparts.
Vehicles feel good too. Base building is also done in an interesting way as you
can just plop a campfire and a sleeping bag down just about anywhere and claim
that spot as your own (campfires, among other buildables, will prevent mobs from
spawning in the immediate area). Unfortunately no co-op at this time but the
developer has mentioned that they're working on multiplayer for the future.
Difficulty is also totally adjustable from general presets, to modifying how
much health or movement speed enemies have, or even making different types of
loot easier to obtain. You can really make the game as forgiving or unforgiving
as you want.
Plus you can go fishing and pet dogs. How great is that?
