INCREDIBLE PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR In Sound Mind is a first-person psychological horror video game that dives deep into the theme of mental and physical struggles such as depression and suicide. You play as a therapist, Desmond Wales as he wakes up in a building with no recollection of how he got there. Exploring tapes of his clients is the only way to help him get out of his nightmare. VERY LIGHT ON DIFFICULTY IN REGARDS TO IT'S PUZZLES AND COMBAT: The game is played from a first-person perspective and you're given items such as a flashlight and pistol to progress. I can understand some players criticising the combat. I went into this game blind and when I first booted this game up, I honestly thought I bought a walking simulator horror game. The introduction of some weapons coupled with the combat seemed a little out of place. It definitely grew on me though, I think it just comes down to personal preference at the end. There's only a handful of items and weapons, but I do like the way the game gets you to use them in order to maneuver around obstacles and proceed through puzzles. While the puzzles are pretty easy, they're still fun to solve. The game is far too generous with it's resources, there will be ammo and health scattered everywhere. I found myself running back not to grab anything while I was low, it was just fun to keep my inventory full at all times. This isn't a game where you'll have to manage your resources carefully. For the majority of the game, you can ignore the idea of saving items for a later. If you have it just use it, you're going to find it again sooner than later. There will be very few instances where you'll actually run low on anything. There's an upgrade system in this game where you pick up pills to increase either your speed, health, stealth or stamina. You really don't need to go out of your way to get them unless you want the achievement or love to collect everything. It might be more fun to put yourself at a disadvantage honestly. I think the handful of times I actually did die was due to my own negligence. I'm not an amazing player at all, this game truly is that easy. If you're fine with that then all the power to you but I honestly recommend normal difficulty for most casual players and hard off the rip for everyone else, it's really just that forgiving. This game would've really benefited with a higher difficulty option or even a permadeath one. THE WORLD OF IN SOUND MIND: In most games I'll read the notes scattered around and listen to the NPC's all the way for the first quarter of the game and usually lose interest. This is one of the very few games where I've actually read all of the notes and listened to all of the dialogue to the conclusion. I think the writers did such a great job of creating messages scattered around the levels. They don't just give you more insight into the world, but they're interesting and sometimes funny as well. The one gripe I have in regards to that is Agent Rainbow speaking on the telephone. I found him to be more annoying than anything. You're forced to stay in this singular location while he speaks to you. He calls far too frequently and it slows down the pace of the game too much in my opinion. It should've been reworked so that Desmond had a device that he calls while you can keep progressing in the game while he talks to you. Audio diaries from Bioshock for example. PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR MORE SO THAN HORROR: This game doesn't have many "traditional" scares but it has so much tension. That's where I think this game really shines. I'm on the side that jump scares are cheap and boring, the real horror is when the slightest sound makes you question your next move and even you feel haunted outside of the game. It starts off like a lot of more traditional horror games but as you progress deeper into the game, it truly does feel more like a psychological battle than a horror one. The themes it explores are issues I've endured and felt quite personal to me at times. It's important to take care of yourself not just physically, but mentally as well. Understand that you're the most important person to look out for. It's okay to have a difficult history, but it's foolish to forget it. Our mistakes shape us and it's the past that makes us who we are today. Of course that's how I interpreted some of the themes of the game and maybe most won't even care about that aspect of the game. THE ENEMIES IN THIS GAME REMIND ME OF RESIDENT EVIL 7: Some of the best moments in this game are during the boss interactions and battles. The bosses are well designed and feel unique in how you approach them. They're all of Desmond's former patients and how you defeat them relates to the struggles they had to endure. I'm not saying they're the best designed boss', but I am saying the developers clearly put in the work to make not just them, but their backstory and levels an important part of their design. They didn't just create a random local and slap a boss in it. It feels like Desmond is truly having a difficult time dealing with their struggles again as well as their deaths. As opposed to the common enemy types in this game, they feel like a huge downgrade. I feel like I'm fighting the mold from Resident Evil 7. They're not scary and they're boring to fight. I do like the music that plays when you engage them though! Hopefully the developers are able to create more interesting enemies in their next title. IT'S A TAD SHORT: Desmond only explores four of his patients tapes. While there's interesting diversions and locals to visit, there's just not a heck of a lot. It clearly wasn't in the budget for them. I think this game would've absolutely benefited from either longer tapes or an additional one. Always quality over quantity but I really think this would've been better for the game. SUMMARY: It's too bad I hadn't played this game sooner as I've never felt so compelled to write a review for a video game before as much as this game has made me. I didn't even notice I wrote mostly about things I didn't like about this game and I don't think I'm nitpicking at all. None of that has stopped me from truly enjoying this game. It's a highly memorable experience and was very fun to play through. I VERY MUCH recommend it! Caveman TL;DR: Jump scare little, mind scare yes. It easy but much fun. Me thinks you will like lots.
One of my absolute favorite horror games. I can not recommend enough.
Am I crazy, or is this game great?
My thoughts are my own and I am In Sound Mind. I went into this game not really knowing what to expect other than the fact that my friend keeps on telling me that it's very good. This game is very good. Very sound, much mind. As a 2021 Horror Game, In Sound Mind plays more like Resident Evil 7 and while not outright as scary, it's very competently made and makes up for it in other ways. The story is very rich and rewarding for people who dig a little bit into the lore and do a bit of reading. Even as someone who wouldn't call himself a lore master in many games, In Sound Mind does a great job at hooking you into the story if take the time to read and explore. The music is also phenomenal, also being composed by The Living Tombstone (A YouTube based electronic music project). The tracks they have for the game are very good. Sound design is also very good and atmospheric. A lot of cues are given through sound and the game makes them very clear and concise. Level design is also non-linear and metroidvania-like. It does a great job keeping you on track while giving you enough room to explore and find collectibles. I've rarely gotten lost and even when I did, it was easy using the mechanics and environment design to put myself back on path. Without getting into spoilers, I will just say that there are moments early in this game that make you go, "yeah, this game is something special" as you come to. I would highly recommend this game. It's definitely worth $35 if you have the disposable income and an absolute steal at $5 which is roughly what I got it at.
Amazing game and story
A bit of Evil within and a bit of Alan Wake are clearly in the DNA of this game, which only contribute to create a fantastic atmospheric survival horror. Highly recommended.
Genuinely one of the best overall games that I have played in years. Its actually criminal how long I had this downloaded before giving it a chance. The story, characters, and music made this one of the most immersive games I have ever played and I really wish I could replay it for the first time again.

Tonia best cat
Very polished, no jank, good puzzles, mostly good writing. But the guy on the phone sounds like Bluto, or Pete from Goof Troop. He's a little too hammy to be menacing, which slightly pulled me out of my immersion from time to time. Small complaint, over all a good time.
Really atmospheric and anxiety inducing. Soundtrack is as amazing as the story. You start with knowing nothing what is going on and more you progress the more questions you get. Then somehow it starts to make sense, either because you yourself lost your mind or that there's the thin red line in all that mess. I'd say it's quite the masterpiece in psychological horror.
If this game wasn't good enough, I wouldn't finish it, would I :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOT BAD, BUT COULD BE BETTER This is a difficult game to evaluate, because it's not a bad game, it's a good game but it could be better. When I played the demo a long time ago, I thought it would be a psychological horror, but when I played the final version I noticed that it wasn't. The problem with this game is the repetition of a cycle throughout the whole game. The first chapter was good, but when you notice that every other chapter follows the same scheme, the game loses a lot of its appeal. Basically In Sound Mind boils down to a confusing puzzle game with difficult-to-see scenarios (the game is very dark) while you are chased by an invincible enemy that prevents you from focusing on the puzzles and exploration. All of this makes the game more of a bore, where you can't concentrate on the puzzles, exploration and reading the game documents. Also, in my opinion, the game would benefit a lot from the inclusion of cutscenes and more characters, the whole game is a bit empty, I understand what they wanted to convey, but a game with a big focus on the story without any cutscenes, no people appearing in the game and the entire story being told by files and more files in game, makes the game lifeless and makes the player skip the story, then the game loses its meaning. In chapter 4 I simply ignored the story because the formula was already boring. The game's combat is also simple, with few types of enemies and getting into combat never pays off. The lack of a map was extremely frustrating as well. Upgrade pills as collectibles are only valid for achievement hunters. But, well, the game has good points too! The story is good, if the player has the patience to read everything and not lose the files too, the music is good, the final battle is really cool, the game has a cat that talks and the puzzles can be fun sometimes. I expected more from this game, it started out promising but soon fell into a routine and never evolved, despite the good story, its way of being told is discouraging for an "action"/exploration game.
Great adventure/psychological game. Pros : Art direction/design Puzzles are different from level to level and are fun to solve Rewards exploration Satisfaction when completing a level Good lenght/money's worth Interesting story Cons: Shooting portion doesn't seem to fit with everything else and thus is by far the weakest point of the game. 7.9/10
